Another Azure Front Door Outage — Why You Need a Business Continuity Plan (BCP)

🕓 On October 29, 2025, Microsoft confirmed an Azure Front Door (AFD) incident triggered by a configuration change that caused latencies, timeouts, and errors across major Azure services.

🔄 Microsoft rolled back to a “last known good” configuration, but the recovery required rebalancing nodes — meaning intermittent failures continued for hours.

💬 Microsoft advised customers to consider failover strategies (like Azure Traffic Manager) to redirect traffic from AFD to origin servers while the platform recovers.

Why a BCP (Business Continuity Plan) Matters

🧩 Cloud resilience ≠ zero downtime — even Microsoft’s global edge network can fail.
🕹️ Control your own failover — don’t wait for Microsoft’s timeline.
💰 Reduce business impact — downtime means lost transactions and user trust.
🧪 Test, don’t trust — a documented BCP lets you redirect traffic confidently.

✅ The goal: keep your services online even when Azure Front Door goes down.

Simple BCP Idea: Use an NGINX Server with Built-in WAF as an Alternate Ingress

When AFD is unavailable, a small NGINX server (VM) can act as your “emergency door”, forwarding traffic directly to your origins. It’s independent, lightweight, and ready to activate at a moment's notice.

Key Benefits:

🧱 Built-in WAF for security
⚙️ Lightweight and low-cost
🔁 Quick DNS redirection for failover
🔒 Keeps control within your environment

High-Level Steps (No Deep Config Needed)

  1. Power On the standby NGINX VM (or pair).
If Azure Portal is down — use Azure CLI / PowerShell to connect.
  2. Deploy a simple NGINX proxy config to forward requests to your app origins.
    (Optionally include ModSecurity WAF.)
  3. Validate connections — check response, headers, and logs.
  4. Create an alternate DNS record (bcp.yourdomain) pointing to the NGINX IP.
Use low TTL (≈30 min) for quick propagation.
  5. Failover: Update main production DNS to NGINX route when AFD fails.
  6. Monitor live traffic logs: tail -f /var/log/nginx/access.log Watch for incoming requests and confirm healthy responses.
  7. Revert DNS when Front Door stabilizes and verify normal routing.

Pro Tips

📉 Keep TTLs short on DNS A-records.
🧠 Document every failover step in your runbook.
🧍‍♂️ Regularly rehearse failover with your team.
🧰 Use Azure Traffic Manager if you want auto-failback behavior.
